Pearland Dangerous Drugs: Diabetes Patients At Risk Of Bladder Cancer

Latest News

For many years, the medication Actos was used to treat patients with type 2 diabetes. It was designed to increase the body’s sensitivity to insulin, thereby controlling the patient’s blood sugar levels. Many diabetic patients have been on the drug for several years at a time. Unfortunately, studies indicate that Actos is yet another dangerous drug that could potentially inflict more harm than good on some patients.

The drug Actos, also known as pioglitazone, has been studied for at least the past 10 years. It is produced by the drug manufacturer Takeda Pharmaceuticals. Key findings of studies conducted by French researchers, Takeda, and the United States Food and Drug Administration are outlined below.

  • A long-term French study revealed an increased risk of bladder cancer associated with Actos and pulled it off the shelves. The risk was linked to patients who had taken Actos over a long period.
  • Takeda conducted a 10 year study of Actos users and also reported an increased risk of bladder cancer for patients using the drug. The risks were especially high for those taking the drug for 5 years or more.
  • The FDA issued a warning of the risk of developing bladder cancer, especially for patients using the drugs over a prolonged period and patients exposed to the highest cumulative dose of the drug. Information about the risk will be added to the drug label. Information will also be included in the patient medication guide.
  • The FDA launched an additional safety review of the drug.

With these findings clearly indicating that use of Actos may lead to a Texas medication injury, patients should be cautious before beginning treatment involving the drug. Both the United States and France have issued the following recommendations pertaining to the new concerns:

  • Actos should not be prescribed to people with active bladder cancer or with a history of bladder cancer.
  • Diabetic patients worried about the risk of bladder cancer should seek a medical opinion prior to using Actos.
  • Diabetic patients already taking Actos should continue to do so until being told to stop by a medical professional.
  • In France, the government has gone a step further and is advising that regardless of medical history, no new patients should be started on Actos.

Clearly, the risk of development of bladder cancer in already diabetic patients is a huge cause for concern.
