Educating Teenagers What They Need To Do After A Car Accident
It just so happens that many times when you are training your teenagers, you teach them the steps they need to take if they ever face a car accident. However, when you are instructing your teenagers you should put great emphasis on the lesson and even build them a whole picture to help guide them.
When your teenager reaches age 16, they will likely begin driving. Nearly all parents face this situation which can be scary. In such scenarios, it would be great to teach your kid the right rules of driving a vehicle along with teaching them what they should do if they ever face an accident. Here are some things that you should talk about:
1. Teens Need to Stay Calm
Panicking might not be such a smart way to work through the problem. When someone experiences a car crash, their mental state is going to be out of place. He will feel a variety of different feelings like fear, nervousness, anger, and shock all together. In times like these, you should take a long deep breath and do your best to stay calm.
2. Report the Accident and Seek Help
They should call the police and report any injuries if possible. After making sure the passengers of the other vehicle are ok, remind them not to discuss the accident with anyone except for the police.
3. Don’t Leave the Site of the Scene
Remind your child that they should never leave the site of the scene. It could result in criminal charges being filed against them. Call the police and wait until emergency care arrives.
4. Keep an Emergency Kit
You should keep a kit in your glove compartment. Make sure that you have your insurance card, a paper, and pen in your compartment. A disposable camera and a card with medical and personal details should also be included. Pictures are worth 1000 words. Make sure to take pictures of the damage to both vehicles, the other driver’s license plate, insurance card and drivers license as well as your injuries with the camera or your cell phone.
5. When Reporting
When you are reporting the accident you should make sure that the police officer files a report when you call them. As soon as possible after the accident, file an auto insurance claim immediately with your insurance and the other driver’s insurance.
6. Seek Medical Attention
If your teen is injured in the crash, seek medical attention as soon as possible after the accident. It is important to follow the doctor’s orders regarding treatment and therapy if prescribed. Continue going to the doctor until you are released.
7. Contact a Lawyer
If there are injuries, contact a lawyer as soon as possible. We can help you get to a doctor if necessary. We recommend not giving a recorded statement to the insurance company without first discussing the matter with us. What you say in a recorded statement can be used against you later if you have a case.
